Which vehicles can still drive in Brussels?

Like 200 other European cities, Brussels is a low emission zone (LEZ). Some vehicles are no longer allowed to drive in the city, and the rules will become even stricter in the coming years.

Vehicle access is determined by their European emission standard or Euronorm. This standard classifies vehicles on a scale from 1 to 6, depending on how clean their engine is. The higher your vehicle's Euronorm, the lower its emissions.

Although electric vehicles are on the rise, most Brussels residents still drive petrol or diesel cars. So you want to know where you stand.

Can I still drive my car in Brussels?

That depends on your fuel type and Euronorm. Below you can see at a glance whether your car is still allowed in Brussels.

Diesel

Since early 2025, only Euro 6 diesel vehicles are allowed in Brussels.
From 2028, the oldest Euro 6 variants (6b and 6c) will also be excluded.

Petrol , LPG, CNG

Since early 2025, only petrol, LPG or CNG vehicles with Euro 3 or higher are permitted.
From 2028, the threshold moves to Euro 4.

Fines from 2026

Do you drive a prohibited vehicle in Brussels after 1 January 2026? 

  • You will first receive a warning letter.
  • You then have 3 months to adapt.
  • Only after a subsequent violation will a fine of €350 be issued.

Example: if you drive a Euro 5 diesel on 15 February 2026, you will receive a warning. If you drive again after 15 May 2026, you will receive a fine.

Does your car no longer meet the standards? Annoying, but you have some options:

  • Have it destroyed
    Contact an authorised centre. Note that by destroying it, and by waiving any new registration for one year, you become eligible for the Bruxell’air grant.
  • Sell
    You can sell your vehicle second-hand, but not on the Brussels market.
  • Buy a day pass
    For €35 per day, you can buy a day pass  for a non-compliant vehicle. You can purchase a maximum of 24 passes per year per vehicle. This is therefore a temporary solution.

Getting around without a car

Do you need to set your car aside? Annoying, but in Brussels you often get around faster by metro, bicycle or shared car.

  • By public transport
    All STIB lines (tram, metro, bus), De Lijn and the TEC are accessible with a single Mobib card, which can also be recharged online. With your Mobib card, you can also travel by train between Brussels stations (Jump ticket).
  • Walking or cycling
    The cycling network in Brussels is developing rapidly. You can use a s a shared bike or e-step, or opt for Villo!
  • Care sharing
    Besides taxis, there are several car-sharing networks available in Brussels.

Frequently asked questions

How many fines can I receive per year?

A maximum of 4 fines per year (one per quarter). This applies per vehicle.

Does the LEZ also apply to the Ring R0?

No. The R0 Ring and access roads to park-and-ride facilities (P+R) are outside the LEZ. You can park your car at Stalle, Ceria-Coovi, Kraainem or other P+R sites and continue by public transport.
