Wood, PVC, aluminium: what type of window frame to choose?

Whether wood, PVC or aluminium, modern window frames all have advantages and disadvantages. It is up to you to achieve the best compromise between budget, aesthetics, performance and personal situation. Use our infographic to find the best solution (see bottom of this page).

Wood frame: environmentally-friendly but maintenance is essential!

Wooden frames offer the most natural solution. However, they require regular cleaning and maintenance to last a long time. They are therefore not necessarily ideal for rented property, for example.
Their insulation rating is high and they are available in a whole range of colours.

PVC frames: the cheapest option

While they offer a lower insulation rating than the other solutions, modern PVC frames are a practical, resistant and inexpensive solution. They are even available in imitation wood.

However, they are the worst option from an environmental point of view since they are not 100% recyclable.

Aluminium frames: durable and very insulating

More expensive to buy, aluminium frames have the longest service life and the highest insulation rating. So they are an excellent investment over the long term. They are 100% recyclable and available in a wide range of metallic colours.

The right questions to ask

There are no good or bad choices when it comes to window frames: it all comes down to your situation, your tastes and your constraints.
To help you make a choice, consider the following factors:

  • Budget: are you able to spend more initially for a long-term solution?
  • Maintenance: are you going to do the maintenance yourself? Or will you have to call someone? If you are intending to rent your property, who will be responsible for maintenance?
  • Aesthetics: does the style of your home require you to opt for wood? Could a good imitation suffice?
  • Performance: is your home particularly exposed to the weather? What thermal and acoustic performance are you aiming for?
