How can I consume less energy when cooking?

It is possible to save energy whilst cooking small dishes! Apply a few basic recipes to achieve this.

Optimise the cooking time

  • Putting a lid on your saucepan divides the cooking time, and therefore consumption, by three.
  • Whenever possible, using a pressure cooker or the microwave instead of a traditional saucepan will save up to 70% energy.

Use the cooking equipment sensibly

  • Always choose a cooking ring or burner matching the size of your saucepan.
  • Once boiling, you can turn your ring two-thirds down. There will be enough heat to keep the pan boiling.
  • Turn the deep-fat fryer off a few minutes before the end of the cooking time. Also make sure you do not turn it on too early!
  • If you have a fan oven, say goodbye to pre-heating empty and hello to savings.

Watch out for differences in temperature

  • Unless stated otherwise , make sure you defrost frozen food before cooking it.
  • If you have leftovers after the meal, let the food cool down before putting it in the fridge or freezer.

Look after your household appliances

  • Defrost your freezer regularly. Remove the dust from the heat exchanger at the back of your fridge and refrigerator.
  • Do not forget your hood! A clean filter reduces consumption and motor wear .
