If you move house, there are three possibilities:
In any case, you have to inform your supplier of your change of address in good time. This also keeps the Sibelga ‘access register’ up to date (the register indicating who uses energy where and under which contract) and any meter closures can be properly planned.
If you move house, you are not obliged to conclude a new contract: you can have your current contract transferred to your new address. However, it is advisable to check whether this contract is the most advantageous for your new home.
On the basis of the estimated consumption, technical conditions (whether or not there is a natural gas connection, for instance) and the rates charged or services provided, you can decide to:
You are entitled to keep your current contract with your electricity and/or gas supplier, unless this transfer is not possible for technical reasons (for instance, there is no natural gas connection at your new address). Or you can negotiate with your supplier to obtain a new contract.
Are you changing supplier? If so, prepare for this in good time and find out about the terms and conditions (period of notice, any penalty for termination of the contract, etc.) applied by your current supplier.
Your contract is transferred to your new address automatically or simply upon request (find out from your supplier). However, this is not an obligation: if you move to a different Region, you can terminate your contract free of change and choose whichever new supplier you wish. Of course, you can also renegotiate your contract.
In any case, you must let your current supplier know that you are moving in good time. This also keeps the Sibelga database, which records who uses electricity or gas where, up to date and any arrangements to open or close electricity and gas meters can be properly planned.
