Can I change energy supplier without incurring costs or being cut off?

Since the Brussels energy market was liberalised, you are free to choose your gas and electricity supplier. You therefore have the right to terminate your supply contract at any time (although you do, of course, have to give a period of notice) without being cut off.

There are two possible situations:

  • You did not choose a supplier when the energy market was liberalised. This means that you are a customer of the standard supplier in Brussels, i.e. Electrabel Customer Solutions.
In that case you can terminate your supply contract free of charge by giving one month’s notice. This period of notice begins on the first day of the month following the month in which you gave notice.
  • You did choose an energy supplier and you have signed a contract with a commercial energy supplier, be this Electrabel Customer Solutions or another energy supplier.
In that case you can terminate your contract free of charge on condition that you give two months’ notice. This period of notice begins on the first day of the month following the month in which you gave notice.

Most energy suppliers have recently announced that they no longer charge cancellation costs. To be sure, contact your energy supplier to have confirmation of this. You will also find more information about the period of notice applied by your energy supplier on your bill.
