Who can I sell my green power certificates to?

In Brussels there are 3 options to sell your green certificates:

Option 1: the energy suppliers

To reach their minimum quota of green power sold in Brussels, suppliers sometimes have to buy green certificates on the market. Otherwise, they are penalised with a fine of € 100 per green certificate they lack. In 2019 this quota, which rises every year, is set at 8.2 %. Moreover, energy suppliers in Brussels are obliged to buy Brussels green certificates first, before they can go and buy them in other regions.

You can approach any energy supplier about this, but some suppliers offer more advantageous prices for their own customers.

Option 2: the intermediaries

Intermediaries are brokers who collect together the green certificates of small green producers and negotiate the sale of these certificates with energy suppliers. Some companies that fit solar panels offer their customers this service.

Compare their offers carefully, because the terms and conditions of purchase can differ hugely. Some intermediaries take a commission on the sale, while others buy the green certificates at a somewhat lower rate than the market value, etc.

Option 3: Elia

According to the regulations, you can also sell your green certificates to Elia (the transport system operator for electricity) at the guaranteed minimum price of € 65. These € 65 per certificate however, will be a less good price than the one offered by energy suppliers or intermediaries.

Purchasing procedure for green certificates

At what price can green certificates be sold?

On average, the market price is around € 93 per certificate. Please find the list with average prices (€/GC) here. (see chart)

You are entitled to 3 green certificates per 1,000 kWh, which comes to around € 258/1,000 kWh.(1)
(1) The number of granted green certificates depends on the source, the capacity and the date on which your installation was placed in service. Our example applies to a photovoltaic installation of less than 5 kWc, installed after 1 February 2016.

Find out the number of granted green certificates according to the source, the capacity and the date on which the installation was placed in service.

Green power certificates are valid for 5 years. So you have this period of time in which to sell your certificates and possibly benefit from an increase in value on the market. The Brussels-Capital Region guarantees the current mechanism behind the green certificates for 10 years, starting from the date on which the installation was placed in service.

What is the situation in Flanders and Wallonia?

The rules are somewhat different elsewhere. Find out more on the websites of the regional regulators.
