What should I do if I'm using natural gas or electricity without paying?

Are you using electricity or natural gas without paying? If so, something is wrong. The law states that you can only use energy when you are in possession of a valid contract with an energy supplier.

All consumption without a contract like this is illegal, and you run the risk of sanctions such as:

  • a bigger bill
  • or having the meters closed.

Consumption without a contract is usually the result of:

  • a poorly organised removal (the meters are not yet in your name)
  • breaking the seals on the meters (never do this!).

Conclusion: always inform your supplier promptly if you are moving house and have the meters at your new address put in your name in good time.
