What is the average electrical power and gas consumption in the Brussels region?

Sadly it is difficult to specify an exact figure as there is no unique and universal average.

The amount of energy that is consumed depends on several factors, including your consumption pattern (the temperature set on the thermostat, consumption all day or just a few hours a day, whether your heating runs on gas or electricity, whether you cook with gas or electricity, etc.), the insulation and size of your home, the make-up of your household (a single person will not use the same amount of energy as a family of 5), your installation (class A, B or C household appliances, etc.), etc.

Nonetheless, we are able to establish the major trends. In this respect, we need to rubricate matters according to the customer types as adopted by Brugel, the Brussels energy regulator.
Brugel classes customers into several profiles, depending on their consumption. The figures below are a rough guide.

Consumption electricity

Customer type Annual consumption
Small consumer 600 kWh (peak)
Median consumer 2 036 kWh (peak)
Average consumer 1 600 kWh (peak)
1 900 kWh (off-peak)
Large consumer 3 600 kWh (peak)
3 900 kWh (off-peak)

Consumption gas

Customer type Annual consumption
Small consumer 2 326 kWh (cooking only)
Median consumer 12 728 kWh
Large consumer 23 260 kWh

Check your annual settlement bill and the number of kWh consumed during the year to find out which consumer category you belong to.
