Who checks and services my natural gas installation?

There are various specialists who can check and service your natural gas installation. Below is an overview:

  • Inspection bodies check the conformity of new installations if they have not been put in by a Cerga-certified fitter (safety check).
  • Recognised* heating engineers take care of the final inspection of heating systems when they are started up (checking energy performances).
  • Approved* central heating boiler engineers inspect the boiler periodically.

Mandatory label or approval

Throughout the service life of your central heating boiler, you must have it checked to see that it is working properly and meets the standards. Since the EPB regulations (link in French) came into force, additional mandatory inspections have been introduced and various types of approval have been defined for the specialists who carry out these inspections.

Conformity of new installations (all central heating boilers)

Proof that a new installation complies with the regulations can be provided by two parties:

  • either the fitter who installed the system, provided he has the Cerga label (website in French). To obtain this label, he must have followed a training course approved by the KVBG/ARGB, the Royal Society of Belgian Gas Specialists. To keep the label, he then has to follow a refresher course every year; (find a Cerga-certified fitter, link in French)
  • or an inspection body, if the work has not been done by a Cerga fitter. This inspection body must be approved by the federal government.

Compliance with EPB requirements

Under the EPB regulations, various specialists fulfil a role and have to be approved by Leefmilieu Brussel/Bruxelles Environnement.

1. Final inspection of the heating system (when it is started up)

  • central heating boilers with a capacity of < 100 kW: an approved heating engineer. If your central heating boiler has been fitted by an approved engineer, you do not need to call in anyone else;
  • central heating boilers with a capacity of ≥ 100 kW or systems with several central heating boilers: an EPB heating consultant (an architect or an engineer).

2. The periodic inspection of the central heating boiler (every two years)

  • atmospheric gas boilers  or boilers with premix burner (usually found in single-family homes and apartments): a central heating boiler engineer with G1 approval;
  • central heating boilers with ventilator burner: a central heating boiler engineer with G2 approval.

These specialists are approved by Leefmilieu Brussel/Bruxelles Environnement once they have passed an exam. The approval is valid for five years and can be extended for five years each time. The quality provided is then checked by inspection bodies appointed by Leefmilieu Brussel/Bruxelles Environnement.
