How can i prepare myself to a power cut in case of load shedding or black-out?

You will be given 24 hours' notice  of any power cut... Use this time to prepare, following the recommendations of Federal Crisis Centre.

How can I preprare myself to a power cut?

  • Unplug your electrical appliances to avoid an electric overload when the electricity supply is restored;
  • Charge your mobile phone (but bear in mind that a power failure may disrupt mobile and landline telephone networks);
  • Notify any vulnerable neighbours, friends and family, and advise them to take the same precautions.

What should I do during the power cut?

  • Switch off sensitive electrical devices (TV, computer) and unplug them to avoid an electric overload when power is restored;
  • Set the thermostat of your boiler to minimum to avoid an electric overload on restarting;
  • Keep one item switched on so that you'll know when the power has been restored.
  • Travel as little as possible;  traffic lights may not be in operation and cause traffic problems;
  • Shut the doors and windows to maintain room temperatures;
  • Listen to the radio (battery-powered or wind-up radio, or in your car) for the latest news and recommendations from the authorities;
  • Use torches instead of candles. If you do decide to use candles, put them in candle holders on fire-proof surfaces. Never leave candles unattended;
  • Don't open your fridge or freezer unless you have to. A fully stocked freezer will keep food frozen for 24 to 36 hours if the door is kept shut;
  • Avoid using the telephone so as not to overload the network and hamper the work of the emergency services. In case of danger, dial 112.
  • Avoid using your mobile phone. If you really need to contact anyone, send a text message instead.

What should I do after the power cut?

  • To avoid any risk of further cuts:
  • Do not switch on all your electrical appliances at the same time.  Give the electrical system the time to stabilise;
